Baked and Glazed Chocolate Doughnuts

Here’s an option if Coffee Smoothies don’t tickle your fancy. Or if you’ve experienced the life-changing chocolate TimBits from Tim Horton’s…these would be a second choice. It’s torture to pass by the TimBits when I order my morning coffee. Mmm…do I love doughnuts breakfast.

Mr. Prevention was out of town this past weekend so I had to halve the recipe. I’ve made several varieties of baked doughnuts, and yet, this is the first of the chocolate variety. It’s about time, I know…I know. Better late than never!

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, I was able to limit myself to 4 doughnuts. Yes, that is portion control being exercised. Really. Don’t roll your eyes. I puffy heart doughnuts. Lucky for me, they come in at only 119 calories each. Once again, baked doughnuts exceed my expectations taste-wise and calorie-wise. :-D

These weren’t the lightest baked doughnuts I’ve made, but they sure were good. The butter and the glaze increase the calorie and fat totals, which remain very respectable. Especially for a doughnut. There are some notes in the result below that would help lighten up the recipe even more. ;)

I am heading to Cincinnati after rounds with the doctor today – my friend Mary and I are going to the Cubs vs. Reds game! :-D Too bad I am going in a hoodie and scarf. And it would appear rain and cold temps are in the forecast all evening. Boo. If there’s one thing I will endure rain & cold for, it’s sports. GO CUBS!!

Question: Where did spring go? :(

Happy Tuesday!

Now I like this breakfast option :) yum!

  2. Mmm…I can’t believe you found a way to make a low-fat donut that still tastes great. You’re a genius, Nicole! Now I just have to get a donut pan… :-)

  3. Joanne says:

Four donuts is definitely self control. Plus they are SO not bad calorie-wise either! And they look amazing….the perfect treat!

Have fun at the game! I’m willing to get rained on for baseball-watching also. It’s in my genes.

  4. Nick would love it if I made DONUTS! Of course, I wouldn’t tell them they were so low in calories, no no no.
Enjoy the Red’s game tonight (GO REDs!!!) I love baseball games in the summer. We never go, but I used to go all the time as a kid, and a few times after college. Good times.

What are our plans for Friday?? We haven’t decided, have we?

  5. MMMMMmmmmm! I need these!

  6. Cold coffee may not be my thing, but yes, I can totally get on board with these…

I’m asking for a donut pan for my birthday this year. :)

  7. My sis is a fan of the chocolate glazed but I’m more of a sour cream glazed kind of girl. Unfortunately those are, like, the worst doughnuts you can get at Timmy’s.

    • I lie. Actually Walnut Crunch is the worst-for-you doughnut you can get at Tim Hortons’. Don’t get it. Or do. Because it’s tasty– like chocolate glazed with walnut added.

      • Nicole says:

I’m scared of their doughnuts. After trying the TimBits I’ve all but sworn them off. I love their coffee and if I know what I’m missing with each pass through the drive-thru…well, it just wouldn’t be good! Talk about a stall on the scale!!!

  8. Tes says:

I love bake doughnuts… these sounds really addictive :) But I will definitely try :)

  9. You are your doughnuts. :) When are you going to mail me my batch?!

  10. Coffee and doughnuts? :)

Enjoy the game! I’ll be crossing my fingers it doesn’t rain on you.

  11. Heather says:

I have no idea where spring went. It was 49 degrees and misty rain this morning. I’m wearing a sweater to work.

Enjoy the game – and those donuts look amazing – I love chocolate donuts!

  12. Is it weird that I felt full Canadian pride when you mentioned Tim Hortons? I LOOOOVE Tim Hortons, and yes, TimBits are pretty much the best thing ever.

  13. Please bring me a donut! These sound perfect. I love the cocoa added and that you kept it whole wheat!

  14. Have fun at the Cubs game! I always love going to baseball games. So much fun!
Those doughuts look to die for! I would be worried I would eat the whole batch if I made them.

  15. Faith says:

I could go for one of these lovely donuts with my coffee right now! They look awesome and I love how they’re much lighter than a typical donut! Have a great time at the game, Nicole…stay warm and go Cubs! ;)

  16. Wow this variety of donuts looks awesome! I stil have some leftover dough in my freezer so perhaps I will need to thaw it out and glaze them! Yum!

  17. Mari says:

Yums that looks deeelish and I think I can even make this!

  18. katie says:

A baked, chocolate donut…and glaze! YUM.

  19. I can’t even the last time I had a donut :( I actually passed by a Krispy Kreme on Saturday and it made me crave really bad! lol

  20. Brittany Beard says:

Nicole, what size doughnut pan do you use, it is regular size or a mini size pan?
    Thanks!

    • Nicole says:

Hi Brittany! I believe it would be considered a mini – they’re about 4-inch diameter. I hope that helps!

      • Brittany says:

Thank you, I’m going to have to go find one of these pans because these doughnuts look delicious!
